Alfred H. Maurer, born New York City - Standing Nude - ca. 1927-1928 - T-Shirt

A tall, narrow pencil-and-charcoal study of a standing nude, where the figure seems to rise out of a pale ground in soft, smudged tones.

Visual Elements & Composition

Cream paper fills most of the frame, roughly four-fifths of the sheet, and the drawing is built on a vertical panel. A raised arm and shoulder curve across the upper right, while broad soft-grey shading suggests the torso. A darker charcoal contour runs down the right side of the body to the lower edge, and a fainter line on the left describes the other side of the figure. Loose, wavering strokes at the upper left and along the sides hint at the space around the body. Nothing in the image is set in hard outline, so the figure never fully settles into a finished form.

Meaning & Symbolism

The drawing is about gesture and volume rather than anatomy. The body reads as a sequence of flowing curves, and the blurred modelling and tall format give it a sense of height and slow movement. Alfred H. Maurer (1868-1932) was born in New York City and spent long periods in Paris, where he absorbed the bold colour of the Fauves and later the structural approach of Cubism. This figure study, dated ca. 1927-1928, comes from the later years of his career, when he kept returning to the human body through expressive, tonal drawing alongside his painted work in American modernism.

On the T-Shirt

Because the figure is drawn in soft, open strokes, it reads well across the broad front of a tee, where the curves of the arm and torso can run with the body's own shape. The pale ground of the sheet becomes the shirt's background, so the charcoal contours stand out as the figure moves across the chest. Worn close, the drawing keeps the quiet, unfinished rhythm that defines the original sheet.
