Alice Pike Barney, born Cincinnati, OH - Nightclub - ca. 1929 - T-Shirt

A loosely worked pastel portrait of a young woman with a dark bob, a rope of pearls and an ochre wrap, set against a smoky grey ground.

Visual Elements & Composition

The figure fills a vertical portrait rectangle, turned slightly to one side. Her pale face is softly modelled, with green-grey eyes and strong rose-red lips, the most saturated accent in the image. Warm ochre and amber dominate the lower half, while charcoal strokes frame the hair against a warm grey background. The whole is built from quick, overlapping marks rather than fine contour, so the image reads as atmosphere as much as outline.

Meaning & Symbolism

The title places the sitter in a nightclub, and the styling confirms it. The short bob, the pearls and the rouged mouth mark the fashionable urban woman of the late 1920s. She is presented as a modern type, poised and self-possessed. The dim, smoky ground and the glow of the warm garment evoke a low-lit interior where light falls on faces and jewellery. Alice Pike Barney (American, 1857–1931) was a painter and pastellist who worked in Washington, D.C., and Paris. This late work, dated around 1929, shows her looser handling and her engagement with the changing styles of the period. The original is held in the Smithsonian American Art Museum collection.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A portrait built from soft, blended strokes suits a garment that is seen up close and in motion. The face sits at the centre of the chest, where it is read in conversation and at a glance, and the pearls and ochre garment carry the eye down the body as the wearer moves. Each stroke of the pastel translates into a shift of tone across the print, so the nightclub mood stays with the wearer throughout the day.
