Alice Pike Barney, born Cincinnati, OH - Self Portrait with Hat and Veil - ca. 1900 - T-Shirt

This pastel self portrait by Alice Pike Barney shows the artist from the shoulders up, wearing a dark plumed hat and a fine veil against warm tan paper.

Visual Elements & Composition

The solid black of the hat dominates the upper half of the sheet, its broad layered brim and soft plumes balanced by the pale face and blouse below. The head turns slightly to the right while the eyes meet the viewer directly. A veil marked with small dark dots falls across the face and upper cheek, softening the features without hiding them. A high white collar gathers into a bow at the throat, and the face is modelled with touches of rose and grey.

The tan of the paper stays visible in places and works as part of the modelling. The signature sits in the lower right corner.

Meaning & Symbolism

The portrait presents a sitter in fashionable dress, with attention given to costume, texture and the play of light across fabric. Barney, born in Cincinnati, worked in pastel and oil and became known as a portraitist in Washington, D.C., where she also ran a studio and salon. This self portrait, dated to about 1900, belongs to her early and middle career, when she was developing the loose, luminous manner that later defined her work. The pastel medium let her work quickly and directly, and this sheet shows that immediacy. It is held in the Smithsonian American Art Museum collection.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

The portrait is cropped at the shoulders, so it sits across the chest as a single figure with the face at the centre of the shirt. From a distance the dark hat reads first and the pale face and collar follow. Up close, the veil's fine dark marks reward a second look as you move, and the paper's warm tan gives the whole image a soft, worn-in tone.
