Alice Pike Barney, born Cincinnati, OH - The White Turban - 1911 - T-Shirt

A pastel head-and-shoulders portrait shows a young woman in a white turban, looking straight out of the picture with a steady, watchful gaze.

Visual Elements & Composition

The figure fills a vertical frame, her face and turban set against a warm grey-brown ground. The white turban catches the strongest light at its crown, and her lips are a single deep red stroke. Beneath a pale grey wrap she wears a dark navy high-necked garment. Behind her shoulders runs a band of patterned fabric in blues, greens, rose and yellow, which breaks the calm neutrals with colour. The pastel is laid in short, broken strokes, so the skin and drapery shimmer rather than sit flat.

Meaning & Symbolism

The turban and the patterned textile place the sitter within the Orientalist costume vocabulary that European and American painters favoured in the period. The direct gaze pulls against that convention, giving the woman her own presence so the dress becomes a setting for an individual rather than a type. The handwritten inscription at upper left, To my Daughter, with the place name Paris, marks the drawing as a personal gift rather than a public commission. It was made by Alice Pike Barney (1857 to 1931), born in Cincinnati, who spent much of her career in Paris and Washington, D.C. This work reflects her early 1910s practice, where broken surfaces and close attention to expression were central.

Wearing a Portrait Close to the Body

A head-and-shoulders portrait is built to be seen up close, and this design rewards that. The steady eyes and the glow at the turban's crown sit at the centre of the chest, so the face meets the viewer as they look down at the shirt. The textured pastel and the scattered colour of the backdrop read as the shirt moves, and the inscription's story of a gift from mother to daughter gives the image a quiet personal weight.
