Ando Hiroshige, Japanese, 1797–1858 - Maisaka, Imaki Point, in The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido Road (Tokaido - ca. 1834 v1 - T-Shirt

This ukiyo-e woodblock print shows the coastline at Maisaka, where a steep rocky headland rises out of the sea and Mount Fuji sits in the distance across the bay.

Visual Elements & Composition

The composition is a horizontal rectangle built in layers. Deep blue water fills much of the lower field, broken by small fishing boats and a wooden stake fence standing in the shallows. The rocky headland rises at the centre, its slate grey mass set against pale yellow sky. Pine trees frame the foreground shore in pale green and dark tones, and a touch of rust red adds warmth at the edges. Mount Fuji appears small and pale on the horizon, so the eye moves from the foreground trees to the headland and out to the mountain. Japanese characters on the print read 東海道 (Tokaido), 五拾三次之内 (Fifty-Three Stations), 舞坂 (Maisaka) and 廣重 (Hiroshige).

Meaning & Symbolism

Hiroshige created this scene around 1834 as one of the stations in The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido Road. The Tokaido linked Edo and Kyoto along the coast, and it carried pilgrims, merchants and officials through the post towns that the series records. Mount Fuji, the bay and the fishing boats signal the journey's sense of place, while the calm, contemplative mood reflects Hiroshige's skill at turning ordinary landscape into poetry about nature and travel in Edo-period Japan.

Where the Print Meets the Shirt

A tee is worn close to the body and seen from every side, so the print travels with the wearer rather than hanging on a wall. The horizontal scene spreads across the chest, letting the headland, bay and mountain read as a single view. Wearing this Tokaido station puts a stretch of Hiroshige's coastal road on the body in motion.
