Ando Hiroshige, Japanese, 1797–1858 - Maisaka, Imaki Point, in The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido Road (Tokaido - ca. 1834 v2 - T-Shirt

This design reproduces Ando Hiroshige's woodblock print of Imaki Point at Maisaka, a coastal stretch of the Tokaido Road, made in Japan around 1834.

Visual Elements & Composition

The scene is built on the meeting of land and water. The shoreline runs through the composition, with open coast and sea stretching beyond it and small figures of travelers moving along the route. The colour comes from layered inks laid over the woodblock, and the wide sky and open water give the image its calm, spacious, contemplative mood.

Meaning & Symbolism

The Tokaido was the coastal highway linking Edo, the administrative capital, with Kyoto, the imperial centre. Its post stations were where travelers rested and where regional landscapes became part of daily life. Imaki Point stands for that journey: a place on the road where merchants, pilgrims and samurai pass through changing geography. Hiroshige is one of the most influential masters of ukiyo-e, and his Tokaido views set a new standard for landscape art, turning a route of travel into a lasting record of a place and the people who moved through it.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A tee is worn close to the body and seen in motion, so the print moves with the wearer. The scene opens across the chest like a passage through a landscape, and the shoreline and travelers come into view as you walk. Hiroshige's views were made to be followed from station to station, and this design carries that sense of passing through a place on a long road.
