Auguste Rodin, French, born Paris, - Figure Sketch - n.d. - T-Shirt

A loose graphite study of a male nude sprawled diagonally across a pale sheet, drawn in many searching lines that revise the pose as the pencil moves.

Visual Elements & Composition

The figure runs corner to corner in graphite grey against pale parchment, which fills most of the sheet. The head rests on one raised arm at upper right, face turned away, and the torso angles down toward the centre. One leg reaches toward the lower edge, its foot sketched in quick, open strokes, while a second, fainter line of leg and arm overlaps it at left. A handwritten inscription sits partly legible in the lower right corner, and the only other text is the name Rodin.

Meaning & Symbolism

Rodin, the French sculptor who reshaped modern sculpture through his figures in clay, plaster and bronze, made drawings like this as working studies. Here the figure seems drawn several times over, each contour recording a correction in balance and movement. The pose is unstable and almost falling, with weight carried across the body rather than held upright, so the subject is the physical tension of a body in transition. The sheet is undated in the catalogue and belongs to the late nineteenth to early twentieth century, when studies like this were the step before a figure was fixed in a finished form.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A sketch of this kind is built from line, so the drawing reads best at chest scale, where the overlapping contours of the limbs and the diagonal sprawl of the figure can be seen as one motion. Wearing it puts the search for balance across the body itself, with the head resting at the shoulder and the working lines running down the front.
