Auguste-Emmanuel Pointelin, French, - Landscape - n.d. - T-Shirt

A charcoal landscape in which two tall trees stand against a dark wooded edge, opening onto a soft, clouded sky.

Visual Elements & Composition

Charcoal black dominates the sheet, with warm grey and pale tan paper filling the rest. Two tall trees rise at the left, their trunks and spreading branches built from dark, soft strokes. To the right, a dense mass of woodland recedes in a rhythmic edge of crowns, broken by a few lighter gaps where the sky shows through. The upper right is worked in pale, grainy tones, and a darker band of ground runs across the lower part of the scene. The drawing has no figures and no text beyond the artist's signature in the lower left corner.

Meaning & Symbolism

The drawing shows a quiet stretch of countryside at the edge of a wood, where the emphasis falls on tonal mass rather than detail. Trees and sky share the same grey light, so the viewer's eye moves between the dark trunks at the left and the open sky above the wood. Pointelin, a French artist born in Arbois in 1839 and died in Paris in 1933, worked in the landscape tradition, and this sheet belongs to the naturalist manner of the nineteenth century, in which charcoal was used to build atmosphere from broad tones.

Wearing This Tee

The wide, horizontal format of the drawing suits the chest of a tee, with the dark trees anchoring one side and the pale sky opening across the other. The classic fit keeps the image relaxed and open as it moves with you, and the crew neckline sits above the scene like the top edge of a wooded horizon. It is a landscape meant to be seen up close, in the same quiet mood it was drawn in.
