BLAENAU GWENT Shield (United Kingdom) (Coat of Arms) Hoodie
This hoodie showcases the official coat of arms of Blaenau Gwent County Borough in South Wales, a proud emblem steeped in history and local significance.
Design Elements and Symbolism
The central design features the shield, a key element of the Blaenau Gwent coat of arms. The shield is divided into a background of six alternating wavy stripes of silver (Argent) and green (Vert). This paly wavy design symbolizes the dramatic landscape of the area, representing the valleys (Argent) and the surrounding mountains (Vert), reflecting the meaning of "Blaenau Gwent" itself - "where the valleys meet the mountains."
Above these stripes, a chief (upper section) is prominently displayed. This chief is dancetty, featuring three downward points, and is divided per pale (vertically) into blue (Azure) and black (Sable). Adorning this chief are three golden fleurs-de-lis (Or), derived from the historical arms of the ancient Kingdom of Gwent, signifying the region's historical heritage and links to the past.
The design also incorporates a crest, situated above the shield. This element features a traditional Welsh dragon, colored red (Gules), a powerful symbol of Wales. The dragon stands upon a rocky mount, symbolizing the land. The dragon is breathing flames and wears a steel collar, which and, in its foreleg, holds a pair of millrolls, celebrating the central importance of the steel industry in the region's history.
Completing the composition, two red Welsh dragons act as supporters, one on either side of the shield. These dragons, mirroring the crest’s dragon, each breathe flames and wear a steel collar. Each supporter dragon holds a pickaxe, further emphasizing the crucial role of coal mining in shaping the identity and economy of Blaenau Gwent.
