Carl Newman, born Philadelphia, PA - Abstract-Woman - unknown - T-Shirt

A seated woman in a rounded hat holds the centre of this charcoal and white chalk drawing, while the room around her breaks apart into tilted planes.

Visual Elements & Composition

The palette is restrained: charcoal grey dominates, with pale grey-white chalk, sepia taupe and near-black hatching. The figure's face is built from soft shading beneath a brimmed hat, and her dark garment is set off by a pale collar. Around her, the furniture and walls split into diagonal bands and overlapping angular planes. A rectangular window grid sits at the upper left, and rounded forms appear at the upper right. Dense hatching frames the edges of the sheet, pulling the eye back toward the sitter.

Meaning & Symbolism

The drawing places a calm, direct figure inside a space built from shifting viewpoints rather than a fixed domestic corner. The fragmentation does not overwhelm her. Instead, her body and the furniture share the same geometric system, so the sitter becomes part of the structure itself. This pairing of a seated figure with fragmented space belongs to the modernist treatment of the human figure that developed across the early twentieth century, and the work is catalogued under the name Carl Newman.

On the Tee

On a shirt, the drawing's central figure sits at chest height and reads clearly from a conversation's distance. Its angular planes reward a closer look as the wearer moves, since the diagonal bands and window grid shift with each turn of the body. The monochrome range suits everyday wear, letting the structure of the composition stand on its own.
