Carl Newman, born Philadelphia, PA - Abstract-Seated Figure - unknown - T-Shirt

A sepia-toned, fragmented interior in which a bowed, seated figure is built from curved and angular planes, drawn in charcoal and wash by Carl Newman.

Visual Elements & Composition

The palette stays within a restrained range of sepia brown, dark umber, pale cream and grey taupe. The figure's bowed head and hunched shoulders form a rounded mass at the centre-left, surrounded by curved arcs and tilted vertical panels. A conical lampshade hangs at the upper left above a dim corner, a shelf of small objects runs across the top right, and a heavy bench edge cuts across the lower right. The foreground floor is a patterned field of diagonal bands. Nothing in the composition is set apart from the rest; every shape interlocks with its neighbours.

Meaning & Symbolism

The bowed figure reads as stillness or introspection. Newman breaks the room into overlapping, rotating planes so that the person, furniture and walls merge into a single structure. The domestic setting becomes part of the figure's form rather than a backdrop, so the figure seems absorbed in the space around it. The work reflects the modernist approach to the human figure in interior space that was widely explored in the 1910s. It is held in the Smithsonian American Art Museum collection, and Newman was born in Philadelphia in 1858.

Worn on the Body

A drawing of this kind is usually seen at a distance, on a wall. Printed on a tee, the hunched figure sits across the chest and shoulders, so its curved mass moves with the wearer. The fractured planes break up as you turn and reform as you stand still, which keeps the introspective pose in view wherever you go.
