Carl Newman, born Philadelphia, PA - Female Figure - unknown - T-Shirt

This is a seated nude woman drawn in profile, her head bowed and her body folded in on itself in ink outline and warm pink crayon.

Visual Elements & Composition

Bold black contour lines define the figure, and soft rose-pink crayon with light hatching models the skin. The woman crouches low on her heels, her torso curving forward from shoulder to hip, while her arms reach toward the lower left. Her dark hair is gathered at the back of her head. The figure occupies a small part of the sheet, and the warm cream ground is left almost bare around her, so the eye settles on the curve of the back and the simple gesture of the arms.

Meaning & Symbolism

The lowered head and folded posture read as rest, reflection or quiet preparation rather than action. The economy of the outline and the restrained palette belong to the figure studies that were widely made in the early twentieth century, when artists drew the body directly from life to understand its structure and movement. Carl Newman, born in Philadelphia, worked within that tradition, and this sheet is held in the Smithsonian American Art Museum collection.

Wearing This Study

A figure study is built around one outline, and this artwork puts that outline across the chest, where the curve of the back and the bowed head stay in view as you move. The open cream ground sits around the figure the way the blank fabric does around the print, leaving the drawing to carry the whole design. It is a quiet piece of figure drawing, made to be looked at closely.
