Carl Newman, born Philadelphia, PA - Two Figures - unknown - T-Shirt

This charcoal drawing by Carl Newman pairs two standing female figures inside a dense field of angular, hatched planes.

Visual Elements & Composition

The palette is restrained: charcoal black, mid grey, and cream paper. The central figure is seen frontally with the head tilted, and her torso and legs are built from broken, faceted shapes. A second figure, partly cropped, leans in from the right, with a rounded breast and arm just visible. Dark hatching cuts across the pale areas, while heavy vertical and diagonal bands fill the upper and lower margins and compress the picture into a shallow space.

Meaning & Symbolism

The paired figure is one of the oldest subjects in figurative drawing, and here it is treated through structure rather than description. The bodies dissolve into overlapping planes, so the figures appear to emerge from the architecture of the background. The human form becomes one more element of a constructed surface. The drawing offers no story, leaving the pairing open to readings of companionship or contrast. Its fragmented handling belongs to the early twentieth-century modernist interest in cubist-derived form, and it is held in the collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

Wearing the Drawing

A tee carries this composition in a way a framed sheet never could. Across a shirt, the hatched planes and the two figures move with the wearer, so the design reads differently from across a room than it does up close. The sharp angles and the dark charcoal lines sit well against the cream tone of the artwork, keeping the drawing's austere, introspective mood intact on the body.
