Visual Elements & Composition

The figures are seen from behind. The seated woman sits upright and turns toward the left edge, one arm braced on the ground, her dark hair falling against pale skin. To the right, the second figure leans forward on her arms with her back arched and her head turned in profile. The outlines are bold and continuous, and a light pink wash models the shoulders, backs and hips. Most of the sheet remains open cream paper, so the bodies carry the whole composition without any setting around them.

Meaning & Symbolism

The drawing belongs to the figure study tradition, in which an artist removed the body from any narrative to test a pose. The pairing sets a settled position against an active one, so the sheet reads as a study of weight and movement. The work is catalogued under Carl Newman (1858–1932), born in Philadelphia, and its economical line and restrained tint reflect the quick, direct handling he used to work out poses. It is held in the Smithsonian American Art Museum collection.
