Visual Elements & Composition

The large figure fills much of the sheet. Her head inclines toward the lower right, her hair gathered in a full knot at the crown, and one hand rests on a low support near the bottom edge. The smaller figure sits on a ledge or bench, her hip and thigh curved against the surface, one arm extended to the right and her head turned away. Fine diagonal hatching models the flesh in graphite grey and pale shadow tan, while the outlines stay light. The background is left largely blank, and the cream paper, with its warm yellowed tone, carries much of the image.

Turning the figures away from the viewer was a long-established way to study form and weight without the distraction of expression.
