Carlo Marchionni, Italian, 1702–1786 - Design for a Fountain in a Park - ca. 1790 v1 - T-Shirt

A grey wash study by Carlo Marchionni, dated about 1790, shows a formal garden fountain with two carved masks spouting arcs of water toward a central basin beneath tall cypresses.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is built in pale grey-green wash, sandy stone beige and dark grey-brown trees, with a pale sky grey opening between the branches. Two stone pedestals stand at the left and right edges, each topped by a mask or head that throws a curved jet across the scene. At the centre, a circular basin holds a small jet and rests on a fluted base. A shallow pool runs along the front edge, and a gravelled path with low planting anchors the foreground. A ruled border frames the whole view, and a distant hill closes the landscape.

Meaning & Symbolism

The mirrored pedestals and matching arcs of water form a formal axis that pulls the eye toward the basin, the way a designer would lead a visitor through a garden. The enclosing trees give the setting a sheltered, ordered character. Marchionni (1702–1786) was a Roman architect who worked for the papal court and for private patrons, and this drawing records how an architect of his period planned water as one part of a single composed outdoor scheme. It belongs to the late eighteenth-century taste for classical landscapes in which architecture and nature were designed together, just as Italian garden design was beginning to move toward more naturalistic settings.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A tee is worn close to the body and seen from every side as its wearer moves, so the fountain's symmetry reads most clearly when the shirt sits square and the central basin falls at the chest. The calm, balanced layout suits a shirt that is worn every day, with the arcing water and enclosing trees carried across the front of the wearer.
