Visual Elements & Composition

Grey dominates the design, from the wash of the water and stonework to the dark wall of trees on either side. The two mask-headed pillars stand on stepped plinths and face each other across the basin, so their jets meet above the centre and form a clear vertical axis. A small jet rises from the middle of the basin, and the water spills over its rim onto a fluted base. Pale sky and a distant hill open behind the fountain, while a gravel path and low shrubs anchor the foreground. The wide horizontal panel holds all of this in one balanced view.

Meaning & Symbolism

The design treats water as the organising element of the garden. In the late eighteenth century, the garden fountain was a theatrical point within a planned landscape, meant to be enjoyed for its sound and movement as much as for its sculpture. Carlo Marchionni (1702–1786) was a Roman architect whose commissions spanned Rome and the surrounding region. The catalogue dates this sheet to about 1790 and identifies it as a second version of the same scheme. Its cooler wash and lighter tonal handling show an architect refining the atmosphere of a planned garden between studies.
