Charles Balthazar Julien Févret de - Thomas Tudor Tucker - 1805 - T-Shirt

A crayon profile of Thomas Tudor Tucker, drawn in 1805, shows an older man facing left against a warm pink ground.

Visual Elements & Composition

The portrait is a vertical rectangle built around the head, running from the crown to the lower chest. Dusty pink covers most of the sheet, with charcoal in the dark coat and queue ribbon, and pale grey in the face. The crown is largely bare, and the remaining hair is drawn smoothly back over the ear and gathered at the nape. A loosely knotted cravat of light fabric sits beneath the chin, picked out in warm tones. Nothing else enters the frame, so the head carries the whole composition.

Meaning & Symbolism

The sitter is shown with direct, unidealised frankness. The lowered brow and set mouth read as reflective, and the sober dress and bare setting keep attention on the face. The queue and cravat place the portrait in the years around 1805, when this dress was common among men in public and professional life. The artist, Charles Balthazar Julien Févret de Saint-Mémin, made profile likenesses in crayon and chalk in the United States in the early nineteenth century. He traced the outline with a mechanical device and completed the features by hand, which allowed exact likenesses to be made quickly. This sheet reflects that economy of line, and its warm ground gives it a softer tone than his black-and-white work.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

On a tee, the portrait sits at chest height, so it is first read from across the room and then up close as the wearer moves. The figure looks toward the wearer's left, which keeps the profile in view from the side as well as the front. The pink ground and charcoal lines give the print a quiet, drawn-on-paper character that suits a plain, everyday shirt.
