Charles Balthazar Julien Févret de - John Wickham - 1808 - T-Shirt

A chalk and crayon profile of John Wickham from 1808, drawn turned to the right against a flat rose-pink ground.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sitter fills the vertical frame from the head to the lower chest, and nothing else enters the picture. The rose-pink ground carries most of the colour, while black crayon sets the strong nose, lips and jaw in a sharp outline. Pale hair sweeps back from the brow and is gathered at the nape into a queue tied with a dark bow. White chalk picks out the ruffled cravat and the folds of a dark coat with a broad turned-down collar.

Meaning & Symbolism

The queue, the bow and the full cravat were the standard dress of a man of professional or civic standing in the years around 1808, and they give the figure a formal but unfussy character. The composed gaze, turned toward the open side of the sheet, reads as attentive and self-possessed. The artist, Charles Balthazar Julien Févret de Saint-Memin, made many profile likenesses in the United States in the early nineteenth century. He traced each outline with a mechanical device and finished the interior by hand, producing precise, economical portraits of this kind.

Why It Works on a Tee

A profile portrait is read at a glance, and this one is built on a single clean silhouette. Worn across the chest, the sitter's outline becomes the focal point of the shirt, and the plain pink ground lets the figure stand on its own. The design asks for no context beyond the line of the face.
