Charles Balthazar Julien Févret de - William Hill Wells - 1798 - T-Shirt

A crayon profile of William Hill Wells, dated 1798, shows the sitter facing left in a full powdered wig with a long queue tied at the collar, set against a warm peach ground.

Visual Elements & Composition

The portrait is a tall, vertical study cut from the crown of the head to the lower chest. Peach fills nearly half the sheet and gives the figure a warm, plain field to sit in. Charcoal covers the coat and the shadowed hair, while soft warm grey carries the face, where the long nose, firm mouth and jaw are built up in careful gradations of tone. A pale neckcloth breaks the dark costume at the throat, and the eyes look sharply to the left, out of the frame's center. Nothing competes with the head: no text, no numerals, no background detail.

Meaning & Symbolism

The tightly rolled, curling wig and the queue tied with a dark bow belong to an earlier generation's gentleman dress, already giving way by the late 1790s to plainer, cropped hair. That makes the image a record of fashion as much as of a face. The restrained expression and the austere double-breasted coat read as settled and dignified, the kind of civic respectability the period prized. The artist, Charles Balthazar Julien Févret de Saint-Memin, made many profile likenesses in crayon and chalk across the United States in the late 1790s and early nineteenth century, tracing each outline with a mechanical device and finishing the features by hand. This sheet, dated 1798, is among the earlier examples of that practice.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A profile portrait suits a tee because the head and shoulders stay in view as the wearer moves, so the sitter's turned face and wig remain the focal point at every angle. The peach ground carries the figure across the chest, and the dark coat frames the face the way the original sheet does. Wearing it puts a 1798 likeness in everyday rotation, with its precise dress and quiet composure intact.
