Charles Lucien Léandré, French, born - Peasant Woman - 1915 - T-Shirt

A seated woman with piled dark hair and clasped hands looks straight out of a crayon drawing dated 1915, her gaze fixed and unsentimental.

Visual Elements & Composition

The vertical portrait is built around a half-length figure set squarely in the centre. Cream paper dominates the sheet, with charcoal grey and dark brown carrying the drawing. The woman's broad, round face and heavy, deliberate modelling sit at the top of the frame, while her hands rest clasped in front of her. A high white collar and a gathered wrap fall across her shoulders and arms. Behind her, quick vertical strokes and sketched architectural forms suggest a city street or interior. Handwritten text across the upper margin reads "offert par C. Léandre" with the date, and the artist's signature appears in the lower left.

Meaning & Symbolism

Charles Lucien Léandré (1862–1934) was a French caricaturist, painter and poster designer, active in Paris and closely associated with the artistic life of Montmartre. He was known for expressive character studies of working people, and this drawing shows that interest at full strength. The exaggerated eyes and the plain, upright posture give the sitter a dignity that does not rely on flattery. The clasped hands hold her still, and the scratchy background places her within working urban life. The drawing records the faces and bearing of ordinary Parisians during the years of the First World War.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A portrait like this rewards a close look, and a tee keeps it at chest height, where the viewer meets the woman's stare at near distance. The crayon line, with its scratchy edges and dense modelling, carries across the front of the shirt as a single composed image. Wearing it puts a working Parisian's watchful face in everyday view.
