Antoine Injalbert, French, born - Woman's Head - 1915 - T-Shirt

A smiling woman turns three-quarters toward the viewer in this 1915 sepia drawing by Antoine Injalbert, rendered in pencil and wash on pale cream paper.

Visual Elements & Composition

The palette is restrained, built from parchment, sepia brown and a touch of dark ink. Her head and shoulders fill the upper part of the sheet, with short, softly waved hair pushed back from the forehead, a small earring, and a ruffled, pleated collar. The modelling of cheeks, brow and eyes is built up in feathered tones, and the wash dissolves at the edges of the figure. The lower half of the sheet is left blank, so the face is the most fully worked element and draws the eye first. A French inscription runs to the right, signed Injalbert and dated 1915.

Meaning & Symbolism

The inscription speaks of remembrance and American sympathy, which places the drawing among the wartime exchanges of friendship between France and the United States. It was made as a personal gift rather than a formal portrait, so the sitter's broad smile and direct gaze carry an individual gesture of gratitude and goodwill. Injalbert was a sculptor who also drew, and the careful modelling here shows his sculptural sensibility translated onto paper. Its date places it in the First World War years, when artists in France made many inscribed sketches as tokens of allied friendship.

Wearing the Artwork

This design sits across the chest of a tee, so the face is seen at conversation distance rather than held close like a print on paper. The open, unfinished edges of the wash suit the shirt's plain field, letting the smile stand alone against the blank space, much as the blank lower half of the original sheet does.
