Auguste Louis Lepère, French, born - Landscape - 1915 - T-Shirt

This is a quiet country road running across an open field, drawn in pen, brown ink and light wash, with leaning trees framing the scene.

Visual Elements & Composition

Parchment tones fill most of the sheet, with sepia ink carrying the linework and muted green-brown washes settling into the grass and foliage. Slender, leaning trees fill the left and centre, their feathery crowns built from short hatched strokes. A large tree rises at the right against a grassy bank, and a dirt road winds toward the foreground. Two small figures walk along it in the middle distance, and a pale shape sits at the lower left. Touches of faded rose warm the ground. A double ruled border frames everything, and a handwritten French inscription, signature and the date 1915 sit in the lower right corner. The open sky above the trees gives the composition its sense of space.

Meaning & Symbolism

The sheet shows an ordinary countryside view with no dramatic event. The road, the walking figures and the stooping trees describe a modest, lived-in landscape, and the drawing keeps its attention on the stillness of the scene. Auguste Louis Lepère (1849–1918) was a French printmaker and draughtsman, best known for his wood engravings of Paris and its surroundings. His landscape drawings share the attention to tree silhouette and fine linear rhythm found in his printed work, and this sheet shows him working in a looser, more painterly manner. It is held in the Smithsonian American Art Museum collection.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A drawing this open reads well across the chest of a shirt. The road leads the eye down the front, and the trees and sky give the wearer a calm, uncluttered field to look at. Because the sheet's appeal lies in its quiet, unhurried pace, it suits a tee worn through an ordinary day.
