É. Friant, French, born Dieuze, France - Head of a Young Girl - 1915 - T-Shirt

A pencil portrait of a young girl with long hair and a pale ribbon, turned slightly toward the viewer, with a handwritten French dedication beneath her.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is a vertical, head-and-shoulders vignette on warm cream paper, which covers most of the field. Light graphite carries the features, with the heaviest shadows gathered under the brow, beside the nose and along the jaw. Her hair falls on both sides of the face, and one length is drawn forward over the shoulder and tied with a ribbon bow at the temple. The shoulders dissolve into the paper, so the head is the single point of focus. Below the figure, the inscription reads "Hommage respectueux de à monsieur l'Ambassadeur des Etats-Unis," with the date 1915 written in pencil beneath it.

Meaning & Symbolism

The dedication is addressed to the American ambassador and gives thanks for American sympathy, placing the drawing within France's wartime year of 1915. Portrait drawings of this kind were often offered as personal tokens of goodwill, so the sheet records an exchange of courtesy as well as a likeness. The sitter's direct, unidealised gaze sets a calm dignity against the formality of the words. Émile Friant, born in Dieuze in Lorraine, became a painter associated with Nancy, known for portraits and genre scenes, and this drawing shows his close study of a single sitter.

Wearing the Portrait

A tee carries its image at chest height and in motion, so a single centred head reads clearly from across a room. The figure's gaze faces outward, meeting whoever is looking at the wearer. The vignette's fading shoulders suit the shirt's neckline and shoulder line, leaving the face as the central point of the composition.
