Daniel Huntington, American, 1816–1906 - Near Falls of Wildcat Brook, Jackson, New Hampshire - August 8, 1854 - T-Shirt

This is a graphite study of the falls on Wildcat Brook, drawn near Jackson, New Hampshire, on August 8, 1854.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is rendered in graphite on paper, so the image runs entirely in grey tones, from the darkest shadows in the rock and water to the pale paper left open for light. The falls and the rough ground around them take up the centre of the sheet, with the terrain pressing in on every side. Nothing is staged or tidied. The lines are deliberate and observational, built up slowly to record the place as it was.

Meaning & Symbolism

Huntington worked within the National Academy of Design, best known for portraiture and historical narrative, but his landscape excursions show a painter committed to plein air observation. In 1854 the White Mountains drew artists from across the northeast each summer, and this sheet belongs to that movement. The wild terrain was read as a national inheritance, a source of identity and spiritual renewal during a period of rapid industrial growth. The drawing treats a single brook as evidence of that larger claim. It is held in the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum collection.

Wearing the Study

On this Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee, the drawing travels with the wearer rather than hanging on a wall. Its fine, tonal detail rewards a closer look at conversation distance, where the rock texture and the movement of the water become visible. The image sits as a quiet record of one summer afternoon in the New Hampshire woods, carried through an ordinary day.
