Daniel Huntington, American, 1816–1906 - On Way to Chocorua, New Hampshire - August 11, 1855 - T-Shirt

This is a graphite landscape study by Daniel Huntington, drawn on pale green paper during his 1855 journey toward Mount Chocorua in New Hampshire's White Mountains.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is built from fine graphite lines laid over a soft green ground, so the pale paper shows through and sets the mood of the scene. The terrain is rendered as a sequence of rising, rugged forms that carry the eye toward the distance. Nothing in the composition is decorative. Every mark records the ground the traveller crossed, which gives the sheet its observational, unhurried quality.

Meaning & Symbolism

The drawing belongs to the mid-nineteenth-century American fascination with the sublime and the Romantic idea of wilderness. The White Mountains were then a destination for reflection as well as exploration, and this sheet captures the moment of approach, when the wild landscape was still ahead and the new roads into the interior were making it reachable. Huntington was known chiefly for portraits and historical narratives, so these landscape sketches show the range of his work during his most active years.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A drawing made for private study has to be seen up close, and a tee is the one garment that puts an image at chest height and in clear view. The pale green ground and open linework read well against the shirt, and the scene wraps around the wearer as they walk, so the journey toward Chocorua travels with you. Wear it on a hike, a drive into the hills, or any day spent looking at distant ridgelines.
