Daniel Huntington, American, 1816–1906 - Study of Hemlock and Beech, White Lake - August 20, 1847 - Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee Design

This is a pencil-and-chalk study of hemlock and beech trees at White Lake, drawn on a single summer day in 1847 and kept as a record of what the artist saw.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is worked in graphite and white chalk on grey paper, so the mid-grey ground sets the tone and the chalk picks out the highlights on bark, branches and foliage. The hemlock and beech are the subjects, with the forest canopy and understory built up around them in close, observational detail. Nothing is staged. The composition follows the plants themselves, which gives the sheet the feel of a field sketch rather than a finished landscape.

Meaning & Symbolism

Huntington is best known for portraiture and history painting, and he exhibited regularly with the National Academy of Design. Studies like this one show the other side of his practice: careful, private observation of the natural world that fed his broader technical skill. In 1847 American painters were turning to their own forests as a subject, and cataloguing native trees was a way of tying the young nation's identity to the land itself. The study holds that idea in plain, specific form.

Why It Works on a Tee

A study like this rewards a closer look. The tee carries the drawing across the chest, where the branch structure reads at a glance and the finer marks of leaf and bark reveal themselves the nearer you stand. The crew neck keeps the image clean at the top of the shirt, so the forest stays the focus. Wearing it puts a piece of a nineteenth-century field notebook on everyday clothes.
