Dunn, Harvey Thomas - The Homecoming - ca 1918 - T-Shirt

Harvey Dunn's ca 1918 painting shows two American soldiers at the threshold of a gutted house, where the return they have come home to is framed by ruin.

Visual Elements & Composition

The picture is built from warm ochre and olive brown set against cool dark navy shadows. A large wooden door leans at a steep angle across the right half of the canvas, and the floor is buried under broken furniture, a tipped chair and plaster fragments. In the doorway, a soldier in a dark blue-grey greatcoat holds a rifle upright across his body, while a second soldier in khaki and a steel helmet looks into the room. A bright window glows at the upper left, and the lettering "Henry Dunn" and "A.E.F." appears within the work.

Meaning & Symbolism

The title, The Homecoming, takes the familiar moment of return and turns it toward loss. Wrecked domestic interiors were a recurring motif in wartime art, standing for the damage done to civilian life in occupied France and for the altered world returning men found behind familiar doors. Harvey Dunn (1884-1952) studied under Howard Pyle in Wilmington, Delaware, and is known for his scenes of rural life and his teaching of illustrators in New York. This painting, signed with the AEF designation, belongs to the wartime subjects he produced around 1918, and its loose, layered brushwork carries the narrative clarity of his illustration work.

Wear the Threshold

On a tee, the scene reads at a glance from across a room, with the rifle, the leaning door and the bright window carried across the chest. The composition is strong enough to hold its full story at that scale. Wear it as a quiet reminder of the ruin that waits behind the doorway of every homecoming.
