Dunn, Harvey Thomas - The Sniper - ca 1918 - T-Shirt

Harvey Dunn's ca 1918 painting shows a German soldier in a steel helmet standing with raised arms amid splintered timber and rubble.

Visual Elements & Composition

The figure stands centred in a shattered interior, arms lifted high on either side, with a leather pouch at his waist and a strap crossing his chest. Splintered beams slant across the background, while pale blocks of broken masonry fill the foreground, where a rifle and a stick grenade lie in the rubble. The palette rests on sage green, slate grey and dark brown, lifted by off-white and rust orange. The paint is laid on in loose, broken strokes. "The Sniper" is lettered in the lower right corner beside the artist's signature and the A.E.F. designation.

Meaning & Symbolism

The sniper was one of the most feared figures of trench warfare, a concealed marksman whose killing went unseen until it was too late. Raised arms set this figure against that reputation, so the image holds both the menace of the title and the exposure of a man caught in the wreckage. The collapsed timbers suggest a position that has been struck and is no longer safe. Harvey Dunn (1884-1952) studied under Howard Pyle in Wilmington, Delaware, and became known for his rural scenes of the Great Plains and for teaching many illustrators in New York. This wartime subject belongs to the work he produced around 1918.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

A tall, vertical composition gives the figure room to stand across the front of the shirt, with the raised arms and the wreckage around him reading clearly from a distance. Up close, the smaller details, including the pouch, the strap and the rifle among the rubble, come into view as the wearer moves, turning a scene of wartime ruin into something carried at close range.
