Elihu Vedder, American, 1836 – 1923 - study of wrist and left hand - ca. 1890 v2 - T-Shirt

A left hand, its fingers gathered into a loose curl, is drawn in charcoal and white chalk on grey-green paper, with the forearm trailing off toward the lower left edge.

Visual Elements & Composition

The hand sits at the centre of the sheet, seen from the side. Thin dark strokes outline the form, and pale chalk highlights touch the back of the hand and the knuckles. The index finger hooks inward against the thumb, the middle finger folds toward the palm, and the little finger tucks under at the lower right. The ground is a muted, lightly mottled grey-green, and the paler area behind the hand gives the form its volume. Nothing else appears on the sheet: no setting, no props, no lettering.

Meaning & Symbolism

The hand is caught between grasping and releasing, a fragment of a larger action. Drawing it partly closed was a way of studying how tendons and joints shift when the fingers are not fully extended, a problem that occupied figure painters throughout the nineteenth century. Elihu Vedder (1836–1923), an American artist who worked for many years in Italy, chiefly in Rome, and who is linked with the Symbolist current, relied on expressive gesture in his imaginative figure compositions and in his illustrations to the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, published in 1884. This study belongs to that practice: an observational drawing made on tinted paper with white heightening, dating from the late nineteenth century.

Drawn to Be Worn on the Body

A hand study works well on a tee because the artwork is built around a single, centred figure with open ground around it. The curled fingers and trailing forearm sit in the middle of the chest, where the grey-green field and chalk highlights read as one quiet image rather than a busy pattern. Wearing it puts the drawing's restrained tonal range in front of you at close range, the way the original would be studied up close.
