Visual Elements & Composition

The forearm enters from the lower left and narrows toward the wrist, which bends into a compact, rounded mass. Elihu Vedder (1836–1923) was an American painter and draughtsman who worked largely in Rome and is associated with the Symbolist movement. His illustrations for the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, published in 1884, placed a premium on expressive gesture, and hands were among the most demanding parts of the figure for him. This study isolates one small gesture to test how finger joints and wrist tendons change with each turn. The partly closed grip implies an action rather than showing one: a hand that has just let go or is about to take hold.
