Elihu Vedder, American, 1836 – 1923 - Study of two hands reaching - ca. 1890 v1 - T-Shirt

Elihu Vedder's study of two outstretched arms and hands, drawn in fine graphite on pale paper, isolates a single gesture and studies its movement.

Visual Elements & Composition

The pale parchment ground fills most of the sheet, with graphite grey forms set across it. Two arms extend in opposite directions: the upper arm reaches right with its fingers hanging down, and the lower arm reaches left with the palm angled toward the ground. Light hatching along the forearms turns the limbs in space. Below the hands, a few loose pale blue pencil strokes sweep diagonally and stop short of resolving into anything, leaving the lower part of the sheet open. The torn edge at the top and right gives the study its unfinished, working-paper quality.

Meaning & Symbolism

Reaching hands have a long history in figure painting, where they signal appeal, offering, or tension between figures. Here the arms move apart, so the study records a pose of exchange or separation. The fragmentary blue strokes suggest Vedder was testing how the gesture would read within a larger composition. Vedder (1836 to 1923) was an American painter who worked largely in Rome, producing imaginative figure subjects and illustrations. Studies of hands and limbs like this were a routine part of his preparatory practice, allowing him to test a gesture before committing it to a finished painting.

Wearing the Study of Two Hands

A drawn gesture reads best at close range, and this design rewards a closer look: the hatching, the open fingers, and the blue strokes that trail off below them. Printed across the chest, the two arms reach in opposite directions, so the shirt carries the tension of the original sheet with it.

The design is built around the open space between the two hands, and that tension stays visible wherever the shirt is worn.
