Elihu Vedder, American, 1836 – 1923 - studies of hands holding calipers - ca. 1890 v1 - T-Shirt

Three studies of arms and hands closing around a pair of calipers, drawn in black and white chalk on grey-green paper by the American artist Elihu Vedder.

Visual Elements & Composition

Sage grey dominates the sheet, with cream and chalk white highlights setting the forms forward and charcoal black giving the strongest accents. A full arm reaches across the upper left, its hand gripping the bow of the calipers with the fingers wrapped around the stem. A smaller hand at the right holds the legs of a second instrument, only partly drawn. The lowest study returns to the same gesture from a lower angle, with the fingers folded around the legs. The repetition of one pose across the page gives the composition its quiet, analytical rhythm.

Meaning & Symbolism

Calipers stand for measurement, precision and the drafting of form, and the studies treat the hand itself as an instrument of careful observation. Revisiting the same pose from several positions was a standard way to understand the structure of fingers, wrist and forearm before they entered a finished figure. Elihu Vedder (1836–1923) spent much of his career in Italy and is associated with the Symbolist and imaginative strands of nineteenth-century art. He is best known for his illustrations to the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, published in 1884. This sheet, dating to around 1890, shows the figure drawing that underlay his more elaborate symbolic works.

Wearing the Study

A sheet of studies reads best when the eye can move from one hand to the next, and this tee gives the drawing room to do that across the chest. The three gestures sit in a loose arrangement, so the shirt rewards a closer look as much as a first glance. Wearing it puts a working drawing from a major American painter's practice in front of you, with the measuring tool and the hand that holds it at the center of the image.
