Elihu Vedder, American, 1836 – 1923 - study of hands holding flute - ca. 1890 v1 - T-Shirt

This is a graphite pencil study of a right hand gripping a flute, drawn by American Symbolist painter Elihu Vedder around 1890.

Visual Elements & Composition

Parchment beige dominates the design, filling most of the sheet, with graphite grey in the pencil lines and a cream border framing the edges. The flute runs diagonally across the upper part of the sheet from left to right, its keys drawn as small rounded bumps. The fingers spread loosely around the instrument, and the hand emerges from a shaded cuff at the wrist. Soft hatching models the shadow around the hand and flute, while the forearm dissolves into faint, unfinished strokes. Most of the paper is left blank, so the figure seems to fade into the sheet.

Meaning & Symbolism

A study like this isolates one gesture so the artist can master how a hand turns and bears weight. Here that gesture is the stretch of the fingers around a wind instrument. The open field and the abrupt cutoff of the arm turn the fragment into a passing moment, a musician caught mid-performance. Vedder worked mostly in Rome and became known for dreamlike Symbolist paintings and for his illustrations of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, published in 1884. Sheets like this one, kept as studies, show the working method behind his finished compositions. The drawing is held in the Smithsonian's Cooper Hewitt collection.

On the T-Shirt

Seen at conversation distance, the drawing rewards a closer look: the hatching, the fading forearm and the small keys on the flute all read as the artist's hand. The empty paper around the figure carries over to the shirt, so the hand and flute hold the eye while the blank field around them does the quiet work of the composition.
