Elihu Vedder, American, 1836 – 1923 - Study of two hands reaching - ca. 1890 v2 - T-Shirt

Two drawn forearms cross a sheet of ivory paper, each ending in a relaxed hand, one reaching outward and the other angled back toward the viewer.

Visual Elements & Composition

The design is built from soft graphite line on a pale grey parchment field. The arm on the upper right extends toward the edge of the sheet, its fingers drooping with a slight curl at the tips. The arm on the lower left reaches back across the composition, its fingers bunched and angled downward. Dark contour lines define each form, while short parallel strokes model the undersides of the forearms. Faint pale blue pencil traces a wavy diagonal across the lower right, unfinished and partly erased. The only marks beyond the hands are these loose strokes, and the torn margin at the top left stays in view.

Meaning & Symbolism

The outstretched hand is the central subject, drawn as a gesture of reaching or offering. Two arms moving apart across one sheet create a tension that painters used to suggest distance, appeal, or the passing of something between figures. The blue strokes below the hands hint at a surface or drapery where the figures might rest, but the study stops short of showing it, leaving the hands as fragments of an imagined scene. Elihu Vedder (1836 to 1923) was an American artist who lived for much of his life in Rome, where he made symbolist figure paintings and illustrations. Studies like this one were standard in the academic studio, used to refine a pose before it entered a finished composition.

Gesture on Cotton

Hands are a subject you read close up, and this design rewards that. The reaching arms sit across the chest, where the eye moves from one hand to the other as it would across a sheet of paper. The unfinished blue strokes at the lower edge keep the composition open, so the wearer carries a study rather than a finished scene.
