Elihu Vedder, American, 1836 – 1923 - study of a costumed figure - ca. 1890 v2 - T-Shirt

A standing figure in a long hooded mantle looks upward with hands gathered at the breast, drawn in black chalk with white highlights on warm grey paper.

Visual Elements & Composition

The grey ground dominates, with the figure rendered in charcoal black and pale chalk white. The head tilts up and slightly to one side, and the hood frames the face closely. A broad mantle crosses the body diagonally from shoulder to lower hem, so the eye moves down the fall of the cloth. One hand rests at the chest among the folds, and the other lifts a flat object against the body. Most of the surrounding paper is left open, which keeps the composition quiet and centred on the figure.

Meaning & Symbolism

The upturned face and gathered hands signal quiet devotion or inner thought, and the hooded dress lends the figure a timeless, almost sacred presence. The sheet concentrates on how the cloth falls and gathers, so the costume carries much of the expression. Elihu Vedder (1836–1923) was an American painter who spent much of his career in Italy and is associated with the Symbolist and imaginative currents of nineteenth-century art. He is best known for his illustrations to the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, published in 1884. This study, dated to about 1890, is preparatory work that resolved a pose and its drapery before the figure was placed in a finished composition.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

The drawing is built around a tall, vertical figure and a diagonal fall of fabric, so it reads well across the broad front of a tee. Its grey and off-white palette sits naturally on a shirt, and the open space around the figure gives the print room to breathe on the chest.
