Elihu Vedder, American, 1836 – 1923 - study of a male costumed figure - ca. 1890 v2 - T-Shirt

A young man lies stretched across the sheet on his stomach, propped on one forearm and playing a short pipe while his crossed feet lift behind him.

Visual Elements & Composition

Red chalk does nearly all of the work, carrying the outlines and modelling of the figure against a plain tan ground that fills most of the image. White highlights catch the shoulders, arm and legs. The shirt is loosely drawn with rolled sleeves, and the trousers are only sketched in. The figure runs horizontally across the sheet, and the pipe extends off the edge of the paper, so the composition reads as one open rectangle with a single focal point.

Meaning & Symbolism

A reclining body paired with a pipe belongs to pastoral subject matter, where music is tied to rest, idleness and the countryside. The easy, unposed attitude suggests the moment just before or after a tune. Elihu Vedder (1836–1923) spent much of his career in Italy and is associated with the imaginative and Symbolist currents of late nineteenth-century art. He is best known for his illustrations to the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, published in 1884. This study, dated to about 1890, records the figure drawing that stood behind his finished compositions.

Drawn for the Body

A drawing built on one horizontal figure suits a tee, because the design sits across the chest and moves with the wearer. The open, lightly worked paper gives the composition room to breathe, so the image reads clearly without crowding the shirt. The relaxed pose matches the everyday wear this shirt is made for, and the pipe gives the eye a clear place to land.
