Elihu Vedder, American, 1836 – 1923 - studies of costumed male figures - ca. 1890 v3 - T-Shirt

Two study drawings share one sheet: a pair of hands holding a flute at upper left, and a figure in profile wearing a full-sleeved garment at right, both rendered in red chalk on tan paper.

Visual Elements & Composition

Terracotta paper dominates the field, with sanguine red chalk carrying the drawing and cream white chalk picking out highlights. The hands sit across the upper left, the lower hand steadying the instrument while the upper hand arches over the keys, with a cuff marking the wrist. White chalk glows behind them. On the right, the profile figure turns its head toward the edge, its near sleeve wide and modelled in red and white folds, and a far hand lifts in a loose, curving gesture. The two studies sit side by side as an open, loose vignette.

Meaning & Symbolism

The flute and the raised hand place the figures in a moment of performance or reverie, and the simple cloth and generous sleeve set them in an idealised, timeless space rather than a specific place. Elihu Vedder (1836 to 1923), an American painter and draughtsman who lived for long periods in Rome and on Capri, is best known for symbolic and mythological paintings and his illustrations to the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. Studies like this from about 1890 were preparatory work, where costume and pose were tested before elements were combined into a larger canvas. The fluent, economical sanguine handling reflects the manner he brought to such sheets.

Made for the Wearer Who Looks Closely

A drawing this loose reads best up close, and a tee carries it across the chest where the eye settles in conversation. The hands and the turning figure sit against a plain tan field, so the chalk marks stay clear as the shirt moves. Each element of the sheet, from the flute keys to the folds of the sleeve, becomes part of the shirt's own composition, tying the 1890 study directly to the object you are wearing.
