Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is built on terracotta and cream, with sepia red accents and touches of chalk white. The figure fills a horizontal field: his upper body lifts on one arm, his bent legs rise behind him, and his feet cross in the air. Short-sleeved shirt and loose trousers are sketched with a few contour lines, while white heightening on the back, shoulders and legs gives the body its volume. Around him the paper stays open and lightly worked, so the figure seems to rest in space rather than on a defined setting.

Meaning & Symbolism

The pipe ties the image to music-making, and the reclining pose ties that music to rest, leisure and the open air. This is a pastoral subject, where playing an instrument is the story and the body is at ease. Elihu Vedder (1836–1923) was an American painter who worked for much of his career in Italy and is associated with the imaginative and Symbolist currents of late nineteenth-century art. He is best known for his illustrations to the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, published in 1884. This study, dated to about 1890, records the anatomical work behind his finished compositions.
