Elihu Vedder, American, 1836 – 1923 - study of a costumed figure - ca. 1890 v1 - T-Shirt

This full-length study shows a single robed figure, hood drawn up and face lifted, rendered in black chalk and white highlights on a grey-green ground.

Visual Elements & Composition

The figure fills the sheet from head to foot, a tall vertical form set within wide open areas of soft sage grey. Charcoal black chalk defines the outline and the deepest folds, while chalk white heightens the raised planes of the cloth. A heavy mantle falls diagonally from the left shoulder and pools at the feet, and the hands gather the fabric close to the chest, one holding a fold of cloth and the other partly holding a rectangular object. There is no text or numerals; the drawing is carried entirely by line, tone and the fall of the drapery.

Meaning & Symbolism

The lifted gaze and clasped hands read as devotion or contemplation, and the hooded robe gives the figure a timeless, almost ecclesiastical presence. The study concentrates on posture and expression rather than any narrative setting. Drawings of this kind were typically worked up as preparatory studies for a larger composition. Elihu Vedder (1836–1923) was an American painter who worked for much of his career in Italy and is linked to the Symbolist and imaginative currents of late nineteenth-century art. He is best known for his illustrations to the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, published in 1884. This figure study, dated to about 1890, shows the careful drapery work behind his finished imaginative compositions.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

Drapery is the subject of this drawing, the way a long garment wraps and falls around a body. On a tee, that same idea plays out across the chest and shoulders as you wear it, so the robed figure moves with the shape of the person in it. The quiet grey field and restrained chalk tones suit a plain, everyday piece, letting the solemn posture and the hooded silhouette carry the design.
