Elihu Vedder, American, 1836 – 1923 - figure study for a fountain design - ca. 1890 v1 - T-Shirt

A standing male nude steps forward on one leg, head turned and eyes lowered, drawn in black chalk and white highlights on olive-green paper.

Visual Elements & Composition

The figure fills the vertical sheet in three-quarter profile, standing on a low, irregular base. Its weight rests on the raised heel of the forward leg, and one arm bends upward toward the shoulder while the other hangs close to the body. Black chalk defines the contours, and pale highlights across the shoulders, chest and thighs give the body its volume against the muted sage-green ground. The palette is restrained: charcoal, pale grey and cream sit over a field of green that dominates the sheet.

Meaning & Symbolism

This is a study for a fountain, so the body is an idealised youthful form intended as a sculptural element in a garden or public setting. Figures of this kind traditionally stood for vitality, water and the classical virtues of poise and balance. The stepping pose presents a figure in motion, poised before the water rather than at rest. Elihu Vedder (1836 to 1923) was an American painter, illustrator and draughtsman who spent much of his career in Rome and Capri, absorbing the sculpture and figure drawing of the classical tradition. Known for symbolic and mythological paintings and his illustrations to the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, he moved between painting, drawing and decorative commissions, and this study dates from around 1890.

Where the Drawing Meets the Shirt

The drawing is built on the articulation of limbs and the turn of the torso, the qualities a sculptor would translate into three-dimensional form. On a tee, that structure sits across the chest and shoulders, where the highlights and the turn of the body read most clearly. The stepping figure is a design that rewards a closer look, the kind of study that shows its craft up close.
