Elihu Vedder, American, 1836 – 1923 - figure study- design for a fountain - ca. 1890 v1 - T-Shirt

This is a black and white chalk study of a male nude seen from behind, both arms raised beside the head beneath a looping, swirling form, drawn by Elihu Vedder as a figure for a fountain around 1890.

Visual Elements & Composition

The figure fills the vertical centre of the sheet. Soft charcoal-black chalk models the body, with white highlights running along the back, the shoulder blades, the buttocks and the calves. The left hand is clenched near the shoulder, while the right arm reaches outward and upward with curled fingers. A swirling form sweeps across the top of the sheet above the head, and the figure stands on a scrolled base that curls at the lower edge. The palette is dominated by warm grey, with pale grey and cream lifting the highlights against charcoal shadow. The drawing carries no text or numerals.

Meaning & Symbolism

The raised arms and the turning form above the head read as water rising from a basin, so the figure works as a sculpted element of a fountain rather than a free-standing study of the body. Seen from behind, the figure turns away from the viewer and puts the spine and the weight carried through the legs in focus. Vedder (1836 to 1923), an American painter and draughtsman who lived and worked for much of his life in Rome and Capri, drew on the classical tradition of the idealised body, where gesture and setting carry meaning alongside anatomy. Studies like this one, dated around 1890, belong to the decorative and architectural commissions that ran alongside his easel painting.

Drawn from the Figure, Worn on the Chest

A figure study printed across a tee lets the pose sit close to the body and move with it. The raised arms and the spiralling form above the head wrap the wearer's shoulders and torso, so the drawing's sense of rising water is seen as the shirt is worn. The nude's back faces outward, which puts the spine and the weight of the stance at the centre of the design.
