Elihu Vedder, American, 1836 – 1923 - studies of costumed male figures - ca. 1890 v1 - T-Shirt

Two separate studies share one sheet: a pair of hands gripping a slender pipe, and a figure seen in three-quarter profile, drawn in dark red chalk with white highlights on warm paper.

Visual Elements & Composition

Terracotta paper dominates the image, its warm tone showing through the sanguine chalk that models every form. At upper left, two hands grip a horizontal pipe or flute, with a sleeve cuff visible at the wrist and a pale halo of white chalk behind the fingers. At right, the figure bends its head slightly down and turns to the right, its short hair and loose garment rendered in fine lines. A raised hand curls in a looping gesture at the far edge. White heightening lifts the knuckles and the folds of cloth, so the drawing reads as a loose vignette rather than a closed scene.

Meaning & Symbolism

The drawing concerns costume and gesture more than any single narrative moment. The hands suggest a performer holding a musical instrument, and the absorbed profile suggests a character lost in an action or mood. Placing an instrument beside an expressive figure points toward music or ritual, where sleeves, folds and hand positions carried as much weight as faces. Elihu Vedder (1836 to 1923) was an American painter and draughtsman who worked much of his career in Rome and on Capri, known for symbolic and mythological paintings and for his illustrations to the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. Studies like this one, from around 1890, record the figure work he prepared for larger canvases.

Carried Onto the Tee

This is a study sheet, not a finished composition, so the artwork reads best at chest scale, where the hands and profile stay close together as they do on the page. The sketch's soft chalk edges and open spacing suit a shirt, where the figure sits in one clear field and the pipe and sleeve lines carry the eye across the print.
