Elihu Vedder, born New York City - (Illustration for Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám) In Memoriam - 1883-1884 - T-Shirt

A kneeling woman bows her head beside a jug, a poppy plant, and a pale crescent moon, closing the sequence with a scene of mourning.

Visual Elements & Composition

The drawing is worked in graphite and white chalk on toned paper, with tan brown dominating the sheet. The kneeling figure sits at the centre, her long hair loosened and her head bowed over a flat stone. A rounded ewer rests on the grass beside her, and a tall plant with broad leaves and seed heads rises behind. A pale crescent moon hangs above it. A ribbon banner carries the single word TAMÁM, and a four-line verse sits in a light panel at the upper left, framed by a dark border.

Meaning & Symbolism

The image illustrates the closing stanzas of Omar Khayyám's Rubáiyát, in which the moon returns each month to a garden where one guest no longer appears, and the cup-bearer finds one glass turned down. Vedder gives that absence a human face through the kneeling figure. The poppies and scattered flowers around the grave-like stone carry the quiet sorrow of the farewell, and Tamám marks the end of the sequence. Vedder (1836-1923), an American painter who worked largely in Rome, made this plate for the 1884 edition, and its title, In Memoriam, places it within a long tradition of elegy.

On This Tee

This is a single, self-contained scene rather than a pattern, so the whole plate reads as one image. Its tender, elegiac mood suits a shirt worn close and seen up close, where the verse and the kneeling figure can be read in detail.
