Elihu Vedder, born New York City - (Illustration for Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám) Omar's Emblem - 1883-1884 - T-Shirt

This is Elihu Vedder's cover-style emblem for FitzGerald's translation of the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám, a small songbird poised above a stone amid drifting petals.

Visual Elements & Composition

The design is built from warm grey, taupe, khaki and brown, with pale cream chalk highlights. A songbird with its head lifted sits on a rounded stone at the centre, and loose petals swirl around it across a ground of soft tonal sweeps. A sprig of rose lies at lower right. A ribbon unfurls across the upper part of the sheet, lettered in capitals: RUBÁIYÁT OF OMAR KHAYYÁM. A dark border frames everything, so the single figure reads clearly at a distance.

Meaning & Symbolism

The bird, held in a moment of stillness, stands for song and transience, a pause in the movement of falling petals. Roses, wine and passing time recur throughout FitzGerald's verses, and the cycle of blossoming and fading carries the poem's meditation on how brief life is. Vedder, an American painter who worked largely in Rome, made the design for the 1884 Boston edition published by Houghton, Mifflin. Its emblem-like arrangement sets the tone for the book by stating its central themes in a compact, decorative form, using the same chalk-and-charcoal technique as his interior plates.

Wearing the Emblem

A single, centred motif suits a tee, where the bird and stone read as one image at chest level rather than a scene that must be taken in all at once. The ribbon lettering gives the wearer the book's title, and the quiet palette lets the chalk texture show. Each element of the composition, from the petals to the rose sprig, carries the poem's theme of the fleeting moment.
