Fabrique de Saint Ruf, Lyon, France - Design for a Woven Fabric of the Fabrique de St. Ruf - 1800–1825 - T-Shirt

A painted textile design from the Lyon silk house Fabrique de Saint-Ruf, showing white flower garlands, pale leaves and scallop shells on a warm ochre ground.

Visual Elements & Composition

The sheet is worked in white and grey-blue gouache on ochre-brown, and the ground fills most of the surface. Two tall garlands of small white blossoms rise from the upper field like hanging ribbons of flowers. Lower down, two clusters of white flowers spread around large grey-blue leaves that curve upward. A row of six fan-shaped shells with scrolled edges closes the base, giving the repeat a firm edge. A faint squared grid runs beneath the painting, used to plot the pattern before it was woven.

Meaning & Symbolism

Garlands of flowers were a decorative idea tied to festive ornament, and textiles of the period favoured this sense of abundance. The shaded leaves show light falling across their surfaces, which gives the flat motifs a sense of volume. Drawings like this were working documents of the silk trade: a designer prepared the sheet so that weavers could translate its motifs into woven pattern. Dated 1800 to 1825, it comes from the years when Lyon dominated European silk weaving, and it survives as a direct record of how a silk pattern was conceived before it reached the loom.

Wearing the Artwork

A tee carries a design across the chest, where the garlands and blossoms read clearly at a glance and the shell row sits at the bottom edge of the composition, as it does on the original sheet. Worn, the pattern moves with the body rather than staying flat on a page, so the shaded leaves catch light differently as you walk. The restrained palette of white and grey-blue on ochre keeps the motifs legible in everyday wear.
