Fabrique de Saint Ruf, Lyon, France - Design for an Embroidered Border of the Fabrique de St. Ruf - 1800–1825 - T-Shirt

A tall, rising stem of pink blooms, white starry flowers and green leaves, drawn as a border for a Lyon silk workshop in the early nineteenth century.

Visual Elements & Composition

Warm ochre-brown fills nearly the whole sheet, with pale cream and rose pink as the lighter notes. A narrow strip along the left edge carries a pale scalloped motif beside a thin rose line. To its right, a single flowering stem climbs the full height of the panel. Pink and magenta blooms with dark centres sit near the base, small white flowers gather in clusters along the stem, and paler blossoms open toward the top. Long pointed leaves in sage and grey-green fill the spaces between, and buds crown the stem. A handwritten number marks the upper right corner.

Meaning & Symbolism

This is a border design, made to run along the edge of a garment or hanging, so the rising stem frames the surface and pulls the eye upward. The mix of larger pink flowers with smaller clustered white blossoms reflects the taste for varied, naturalistic bouquets in the early 1800s, when one border could hold several flower types in a single continuous arrangement. The sheet is titled as a design of the Fabrique de Saint Ruf, a Lyon silk workshop, and dated 1800 to 1825. It shows the lighter floral vocabulary that replaced the dense garlands of the late eighteenth century, with the blooms arranged along one rising line.

Crafted for the Wearer

A border was designed to wrap the edge of a textile, and this tee carries that idea onto the body. The scalloped strip and the rising stem read clearly as the shirt moves with you, and the flowers stay in view at close range. Worn as a tee, the design keeps the upward sweep of the original border, so the eye travels from the hem toward the collar, just as it did on the silk.
