Fabrique de Saint Ruf, Lyon, France - Design for an Embroidered Horizontal Border of the Fabrique de St. Ruf - 1800–1825 - T-Shirt

This design is a horizontal border of golden leaves, orange drapery swags and twisted cord, drawn as a finished band of classical ornament.

Visual Elements & Composition

Ochre brown fills most of the sheet, with gold-yellow leaves forming a garland across the upper half. Each leaf has lobed, scalloped edges, and the leaves link end to end along the length of the border. Below them, orange-red drapery hangs in shallow curves, each swag dropping into long fringed tassels. At the right, a twisted yellow cord coils upward and ends in a pendant of rounded tassel forms, with smaller orange knots set lower in the composition. The layout reads left to right, with a stamp at the upper centre and the number 1914-21-112 at lower right.

Meaning & Symbolism

Garlands, swags and tasselled drapery were the standard vocabulary of classical ornament in the late eighteenth century. Designers borrowed festoons from architecture and interior decoration to suggest order and refinement. Used along the edge of a textile, the swag and fringe imitate the drapery of a room, and the twisted cord gives the border a tied, finished end. This sheet comes from the Fabrique de Saint Ruf, a silk workshop in Lyon, and is dated 1800 to 1825. It shows Lyonese silk design moving from the rococo garland toward the more architectural festoons that dominated ornament around 1800.

Made for the Tee

A horizontal border is built to run across a surface, and a tee gives it exactly that: the garland sits across the chest, and the swags fall toward the hem as they would along the edge of a hanging. The cord at the right gives the eye a clear end point, so the design reads as a complete band rather than a fragment. Worn, the border carries the formal order of its original textile into everyday wear.
