Fabrique de Saint Ruf, Lyon, France - Design for an Embroidered Horizontal Border of the Fabrique de St. Ruf, - 1800–1815 - T-Shirt

A long horizontal border of white leaves, lilac buds and beaded dots, drawn as a design for embroidery on an ochre ground.

Visual Elements & Composition

The ochre-brown ground dominates the sheet, with broad cream-white leaves set at wide intervals along a single continuous branch. Their edges are shaded in blue. Above them, small oval buds in mauve grow in sprays along thin blue-grey stalks, reaching across the full width of the design. A double row of dotted beads runs along the lower edge, closed off by a fine pale line. The composition is light and open, with no text beyond a stamp at the upper centre.

Meaning & Symbolism

A branch carrying alternating leaves and bud sprays was a familiar way to give a long textile edge a sense of growth, and the beaded band at the foot marks where the cloth finishes. The restrained white, lilac and blue palette reflects the pale tones favoured in silk and embroidery design in the early nineteenth century, when borders like this decorated dress and furnishings. The sheet is titled as a design of the Fabrique de Saint Ruf, a silk workshop in Lyon, and dated 1800 to 1815. It shows the lighter, more open foliage that followed the denser garlands of the late eighteenth century.

Bringing the Border onto a Tee

A border is meant to be read as a continuous run, and a t-shirt gives it that stage: the design sits across the chest and is seen as a single band of growing branches as the wearer moves. The beaded edge at the bottom of the design lands where the shirt's hem would frame it, so the composition keeps the finished-boundary feel the original sheet was drawn to create.
