Fabrique de Saint Ruf, Lyon, France - Design for an Embroidered Horizontal Border of the Fabrique de St. Ruf, - 1805–1815 - T-Shirt

A balanced horizontal border of violet flower pods, pale blue fern fronds and dotted beads, drawn by hand on a warm ochre ground for the Fabrique de Saint Ruf, a silk workshop in Lyon.

Visual Elements & Composition

Ochre brown fills most of the sheet, with pale blue, violet and cream picking out the motifs. Two clusters of rounded, pod-like blooms rise from the upper half, each with a dark violet or orange-gold body, a dotted pale centre and small white star blossoms on thin stalks. Below them, pale blue feathery fronds and rosettes spread outward, and a central frond of white dots arches between the clusters. A band of blue and mauve beads and small star flowers runs along the lower edge, closing the composition. A stamp sits at the upper centre of the sheet.

Meaning & Symbolism

The border works through symmetry. Two matching clusters rise from a central axis while fronds fan out beneath them, so a long edge reads as one repeating rhythm. The stylised flowers belong to the Empire years of 1805 to 1815, when Lyonese silk designers simplified naturalistic plants into patterned units suited to weaving and embroidery. Rather than letting flowers trail freely, the design groups them into balanced units, which is the defining trait of the period's floral vocabulary.

On the Tee

A horizontal border is built to be read across a wide span, and this design keeps that character on the shirt. The clusters sit at the centre, the fronds spread to either side, and the beaded band anchors the bottom edge, so the whole motif reads as a single ornamental line. Look at it up close and the dotted centres, star blossoms and beads come into focus, the same fine detail that the original embroidery was designed to show.
